The following is the process for becoming a school volunteer:

·       If a volunteer packet is not required (see above), contact the organization in question for information on joining, meeting times, etc.

·       If a volunteer packet is required (see above), you must follow these guidelines:

o    Obtain a volunteer packet

» Hard copies available in the main office

» Electronic copy available by clicking on the link below

o    Page 7 (Internet Permission Form) is not necessary unless the volunteer will be required to communicate with individual students via email.  This form must be completed by the parent/guardian of each student and returned with the completed packet to Ms. Gamez.

o    Page 6 (Certification of Freedom from Tuberculosis) MUST be filled out in either of the following situations:

» Volunteering for more than 5 hours per week

» Volunteering for an overnight field trip

o    Pages 2 (Volunteer Enrollment Form), 3 (Background Check), & 4 (Volunteer Release Form) are mandatory and must be turned in to Ms. Gamez in the main office.  Copies off each of these forms will be kept on file at the school.

o    The original page 3 will be forwarded by the school to the CPS Office of Safety and Security.  The volunteer’s record will be checked for any prior criminal convictions.

» Should a criminal conviction be found, a letter will be sent via email to the school principal asking that the volunteer be sent in for fingerprinting and further background screening.  The results of this screening will determine the candidate’s eligibility to volunteer at the school.  Final approval is left to the discretion of the principal.  UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN THE CANDIDATE VOLUNTEER THEIR SERVICES UNTIL THEY ARE CLEARED BY SAFETY AND SECURITY.

» If no criminal conviction is found, a letter will be sent via email to the school principal declaring the candidate eligible to volunteer.  Final approval is left to the discretion of the principal.  UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN THE CANDIDATE VOLUNTEER THEIR SERVICES UNTIL THEY ARE CLEARED BY SAFETY AND SECURITY.

The following are ways in which volunteering is NOT PERMITTED at Kenwood Academy:

·       Security guard, hall monitor, or in any capacity where a conflict or disciplinary concern with a student may arise

·       Coach on any school team

o    If a parent wishes to be on the coaching staff, then they should apply for a paid position with the team

o    The number of paid coaches varies by the sport and is determined by CPS Sports Administration

o    Head coaches are interviewed and hired by the administration and Athletic Director

o    Assistant coaches are selected by the head coaches and approved by the administration
